So, I plug the router and immediately it starts broadcasting a WiFi network to which all my devices connect automatically without me having to do anything else and I’m ready to use AirPlay (or any other app that needs the wireless network). Really that’s all you need to create your own WiFi, any WiFi router will do. If I know in advance that I won’t be able to use a WiFi network where I’m giving a class using the iPad mirroring I always take with me a spare router. The problem occurs when there is no WiFi or there is one but you don’t have authorised access to it (a.k.a you don’t know the WiFi password) in the classroom where I’m going to mirror my iPad to teach a lesson. It’s cool, but far more important than that, it make the lesson more dynamic (apart from being able to use lots of colours, pencils and tools from the note taking app of my iPad). I do this a lot: open a note taking app on my iPad and with a stylus I write whatever I have planned for the maths lesson that day and using AirPlay the students can see what I’m writing while I walk around the classroom. However, in some occasions there is no WiFi where we want to do this.Īs a teacher this has happened to me when I wanted to mirror my iPad wirelessly to my computer connected to the digital whiteboard of the classroom. If smartphones and tablets are involved these apps need the existence of a WiFi network in order to be fully operative or to use some of its features.

The Connect app for your device is free, and you pay for the desktop app. The price of AirServer varies, with the standard licence at £11.99. It’s not for everyone, but if you need a way to mirror your device onto a bigger screen, you may find it handy. This should be possible, as apps such as Duet Display – which you can use to make your iPad a second display for your computer – can do this, but I’m not sure if you can do it the other way around via cable.Īirserver is a nice app that allows you to mirror your iPad onto your computer. I do wish that you could use AirServer over a cable, so that WiFi would not be required, and this would enable you to record videos on the go or places where you don’t have internet connectivity. I have encountered some small bugs, and some occasional instances of lag (which may be because of my WiFi speed), but they did not really affect the experience.

Setting up the app is very easy, and it takes only a few seconds to scan in the QR code shown on the computer’s screen. The stream is usually smooth, and I love that I can record and stream my screen live. My experience with AirServer has been good so far. However, AirServer does offer a handy guide to sorting out your lag issues if you do find yourself experiencing them. You can even set up AirServer to stream your devices screen, so you can have a live stream.Īs AirServer streams over WiFi, you may have some lag if you have a slow connection. This is great for showing app demos, or gaming. There are lots of things you can do with AirServer, and one of them is recording your screen. Your computer will show up with it’s name, and you simply select that and you start streaming your devices to that computer. You can then go into the AirPlay list on your device, and select your computer.
You scan that with your camera on your Apple Device, and then your computer will be enabled on AirPlay. This means that you can see your device screen on your computers screen.ĪirServer mirrors by setting up your computer as an AirPlay device, and then showing a QR code on your computer’s screen.
